The Perfection Trap
Perfectionism is not a personal obsession – it’s a decidedly cultural one. As soon as we’re old enough to interpret the world around us, we begin noticing its ubiquity on our televisions and movie screens, billboards, computers and smart phones. It’s right there in the language our parents use, the way our news is framed, the things our politicians say, how our economy works, and the makeup of our social and civic institutions. We radiate perfection because our world radiates perfection.[1]
Rather than shooting for perfection---we should be shooting for excellence[2]

Community Colleges
www.collegesinstitutecanada.ca
Community Colleges and institutes are Canada's largest post-secondary network.
There are an estimated 213 community colleges and institutes in Canada.
The community college system mission is to design and deliver job focused practical training.
Competency based education (C.B.E.) is the learning model.
Colleges are noted for delivering course material in small classroom settings that facilitate practical learning through interaction between the professor and students rather than academic lectures in large forums.
Unlike universities there is no uniform disciplinary family of academic B.A./B.Sc. undergraduate degree programs.
Colleges offer a wide range of undergraduate one year certificate and two year diploma programs geared to graduating job ready students for employment either in the region that the college is located or a niche specialization for which the college has developed applied training expertise.
Paraprofessionals
Paraprofessional is a title given to individuals in various occupational fields, notably health care , finance, social services and "hi-tech". Historically, paraprofessionals assisted the master professional of their field. In more recent times, paraprofessionals have become a de facto professional in their own right providing services which meet the needs of a particular recipient or community. "High tech" applications and artificial intelligence (A.I.) are enabling paraprofessionals to perform tasks requiring significant knowledge in the field, and may even function independently of direct professional supervision. It is generally understood that paraprofessionals are the next most qualified professional after the master professional in their field.
Colleges and polytechnics are the lead providers of paraprofessional programs with affiliations to paraprofessional certification programs.
Colleges also offer one year graduate diploma and certificate programs for university graduates wanting to pursue designated specialty careers that require proof of certified expertise.
Colleges are becoming active in the micro credential training certification market.
Combined diploma baccalaureate degrees
A number of colleges have developed integrated combined two year diploma / two year university (Diploma/B.A./B.Sc.) four year degree programs, prominent among them being in health care.
Students who pursue this post-secondary education route, particularly if the diploma is associated with a paraprofessional qualification, are able to pursue part-time employment in their paraprofessional occupation while completing the baccalaureate portion of the combined program.

Unis - Universities
Universities Canada - https://univcan.ca
The arts and humanities model of university education was initially defined and shaped by the elite British universities, notably Oxford and Cambridge (Oxbridge) which were havens for learning by the elite. The university mission was to produce graduates who would be "well read" and be in a position to assume leadership roles in the societal hierarchy and government.
Learning modules were articulated as academic disciplines to differentiate them from the trades and professions and students learned by way of readings and lectures
The modern day university adheres to fundamentals of the arts and humanities model of education but is in the process of making modifications to include the "S.T.E.M.s ( Science, technology, engineering, math).
The primary post educational purpose of the university is two fold:
1. Introduce the student to bodies of knowledge as defined on the basis of academic disciplines.
2. Equip students with prescribed disciplinary learning outcomes and the analytical skills to engage in independent academic research .
The foundation for all academic disciplines is baccalaureate degree learning.
Think of the Baccalaureate Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) as a euphemism for the "beginning of it all".
The baccalaureate degree qualifies the graduate to engage in independent academic research in prescribed disciplines at the graduate studies level or professional disciplines such as the M.D. or J.D.
There are three broad categories of universities
1.Doctoral
Universities with extensive graduate and post graduate research facilities and prestigious professional disciplines
Degrees
M.A., M.Sc., Ph.D., M.D.,
2.Comprehensive
Universities with a broad range of baccalaureate and masters degrees programs with a focus on affiliations with professions
Degrees
M.A., M.Sc. , MBA, J.D.
3. Primarily Undergraduate
B.A., B.Sc. Degrees
Primarily small universities in some instances with historic roots in a region or catering to a designated cohort of students; i.e. Indigenous community, religious affiliation.
Size and category ranking shouldn't be confused with academic status. Mount Allison University, a small university that focuses on baccalaureate degree education, has produced more Rhodes Scholars than any other Canadian university.
A number of small universities have created professional and paraprofessional niches. Their baccalaureate degree is linked to a professional service that may or not be an accredited profession but does provide graduates with career opportunities. .
University disciplines are academic silos. Faculty are protective of their discipline and reluctant to mix their courses with other disciplines. This can create problems for students wanting an inclusive academic baccalaureate education experience.
Universities in the Doctoral and Comprehensive categories are dependent on ongoing research grants for funding. Students in baccalaureate degree programs don't necessarily have access to high profile faculty for course instruction. They're engaged in post graduate research. Large lecture theatres have frequently hire Ph.D. students, who are often part-time faculty, to deliver lectures to students.
Unlike college diplomas and polytechnic degrees and diplomas that focus on competency based education (CBE) and produce job ready graduates, university baccalaureate degrees often require graduates to commit to a masters degree or college/polytechnic graduate diploma or certificate to put themselves in a job ready status. Many of these graduate diplomas and certificates are affiliated with professional associations.

Skilled Trades Categories
- Construction is a multi-billion-dollar industry in Canada that offers high demand careers. It features electricians, carpenters, plumbers, steamfitters/pipefitters, welders, heavy equipment operators, and painters, among other trades.
- Transportation includes maintenance and repair of vehicles - ranging from automobiles and motorcycles, to trucks and heavy equipment. Transportation includes trades such as automotive service technicians, heavy-duty equipment technicians, motorcycle technicians, and more.

Types of apprenticeships
Apprenticeships can be divided into two main categories:
1. Independent
2. Cooperative.
- Independent apprenticeships are those organized and managed by employers, without any involvement from educational institutions. They are not formally linked to any institutional educational curricula. The apprentices are not involved in any educational programme at the same time but, even if they are, there is no relation between the undergoing studies and the apprenticeship.
- Cooperative apprenticeships are those organized and managed in cooperation between educational institutions and employers. They vary in terms of governance, some being more employer lead and others more educational institution lead, but they are always associated with a curriculum and are designed as a mean for students to put theory in practice and master knowledge in a way that empowers them with professional autonomy.
Polytechnics
https://polytechnicscanada.ca
Polytechnics are the “new kids on the block” in post- secondary education. Polytechnics Canada was established in 2003 by eight colleges, polytechnics and institutes of technology. It has now grown to 13 member institutions.
The polytechnic mission is to fill the void in university education that is academic focused and with traditional discipline driven curriculum and courses based on the historic arts and humanities model wherein graduates at the baccalaureate degree level are well read but not workplace ready.
Polytechnics are the leaders in the design and development of applied baccalaureate S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, math) programs
Polytechnics have embraced "new age" competency based education (C.B.E.) at the baccalaureate degree level that focus on work integrated learning (WIL) combining education with work placements and applied research.
Polytechnics deliver pragmatic, industry-relevant skills to young learners, targeted training to those at mid-career and bridging programs to newcomers
Polytechnics offer a breadth and diversity of CBE/WIL focused programs
- Four-year accredited Baccalaureate degrees,
- Graduate diplomas,
- Graduate certificates,
- Micro credential certificates
Polytechnic programs are associated with a number of professional and paraprofessional organizations. Their certifications are linked to accreditation with the association.
